Magnetoencephalography Without a Shielded Room
Magnetoencephalography (MEG) offers exceptional temporal and spatial precision for non-invasive brain imaging. Yet, its widespread adoption has long been constrained by the prohibitive cost and infrastructure required to house systems in magnetically shielded rooms.
In an upcoming Brainbox Initiative webinar, Dr Tim Tierney will share how he and his team are challenging this long-standing limitation with a new approach to MEG: a lightweight, low-cost, multichannel system capable of imaging brain activity without the need for a magnetically shielded room.
By combining low-cost active shielding with software-based spatial filtering, the system weighs less than 75 kg — more than 100 times lighter than a typical magnetically shielded room — while eliminating the need for passive magnetic shielding. Its multichannel design enables not only the detection but also the localisation of brain signals more than 300 million times weaker than environmental interference.
The team also demonstrates that the signal-to-noise ratio of in vivo recordings is comparable to that achieved with conventional cryogenically cooled MEG systems operating inside magnetically shielded rooms.
