TMS at 40: Celebrating 40 Years of Innovation and Advancing Frontiers in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the first magnetic stimulation of the human brain that successfully evoked movements. We are delighted to announce a landmark event at Queen Square, London - returning to the very site where it happened. Join us on 8th September 2025 to celebrate 40 Years of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) at a unique one-day conference that brings together the pioneers who were present during this historic day, the inventors who transformed an idea into a global phenomenon, and the innovators shaping its future.
This special event will feature speakers sharing their remarkable journeys from inception to implementation, alongside key opinion leaders from the academic and clinical spheres discussing the latest breakthroughs and future potential of this groundbreaking technique. Together, we will reflect on four decades of progress and explore how TMS continues to push the boundaries of neuroscience, neuromodulation, and clinical practice.
Joining us will be the pioneers who invented the first TMS device: Professor Anthony Barker, Dr. Reza Jalinous, and Professor Ian Freeston who will kick off the meeting with their insights and introductory remarks and a lecture by Anthony Barker on the discovery of TMS.
Alongside them, we will be joined by:
- Professor Sven Bestmann, University College London
- Professor Bülent Cengiz, Gazi University, Ankara
- Professor Robert Chen, University of Toronto
- Dr Ricci Hannah, King's College London
- Professor Martin Koltzenburg, University College London
- Professor Roger Lemon, University College London
- Professor Pantelis Lioumis, Aalto University, Helsinki
- Dr Roisin McMackin, Trinity College Dublin
- Professor Walter Paulus, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich
- Professor Angel Peterchev, Duke University
- Professor Paolo Rossini, IRCCS San Raffaele, Rome
- Professor John Rothwell, University College London
- Dr Ginte Samusyte, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences
- Professor Hartwig Siebner, Copenhagen University Hospital
- Professor Charlotte Stagg, Oxford University
- Professor Yoshikazu Ugawa, Fukushima Medical University

The conference will be divided in four sessions, chaired by Professor Ian Freeston, Professor Sven Bestmann, and Professor Roger Lemon.
